Reflections and shit
i already posed photo reflections so here are the rest. they are pretty boring i would not read them.
Typography Reading Reflection
I found the parts of a letter reading very interesting. This project made me more and more interested in type and how it is used as the project went on. I think that it is interesting that even when we were looking at everyones individual word collages together during Monday lecture, people could tell when it wasn’t futura. There was actually a guy who stopped my group, when we were walking with our big letters, and asked if the font was futura. I thought that it was interesting that some random guy could identify font styles just by looking at them and it made me jealous. I wanted to be able to do that. This reading definitely helps with that. You start to notice things that you wouldn’t other wise, like if the bracket is curved or angled. I have pretty messy hand writing but it really bothers me when font styles are wonky. I can’t stand it when a lower case letter goes over the base line like when looking at the x-height, it really bothers me that rockwell and futura go over the base line. The only terminology I knew before this reading was tail and stroke, so this reading was interesting in the since that I had never heard of a lot of these things before.
Word Collage
When I was told we had to pick a word and not have any preconceived ideas about the word I knew what I was going to do. I wrote them all out and drew out one. That was the only way that I was going to be able to not have ideas already in my head as I looked over the words. I drew out support and had ideas flood into my head. That first day of collaging proved to be so much more difficult than I thought. I came to a stand still at one point and it was really hard to keep moving. But after looking at other people’s ideas and my definition again I started to come up with more. Then I really liked coming up with more and more. I was stumped again when it came to color. It proved really challenging. I ended up just making a ton of color variations and picking from that. But I really like how they ended up.
Big Type on Site
After constructing the letters and painting them it was really cool to see them outside and in a totally different environment. Trying different environments was fun. I learned a lot about placement. I also thought that the letters were going to be too big but they were perfect. If anything it was to small but I thought for my groups word, extend, the size was just fine. We chose to paint ours blackish gray because we thought that it would stand out against nature without being too obnoxious. We wanted to keep a classic look. I think that we achieved a timeless look. Everything went really well until we had a letter stolen. We had everything set up for the tromp around campus and we were ready to go. Then I got a call from Lindsey saying that our D was stolen. I found it really funny but the rest of the group didn’t. We got it back so that is good but it was not very nice of someone to steal a letter.
